Have you ever used peat moss as a media filter?

I was thinking of setting up a tank amazon in my 55 gallons, and have heard that you can filter your water through, or peat moss, and it maintains the pH of the water down. I also understanding that you can put the water brown, but if you use carbon, it removes discoloration. Would carbon using cancel the effect of peat, or just remove the discoloration. Have you ever used, and if so, what were your results, good or bad. I appreciate any What help. Thank you.

I used moss peat in my filters before. Specifically peat pellets as you can get from Hagen. It definitely turns your water a light brown color but if you fish in South America (I guess that's what you leave with a reservoir of the Amazon), they love you for it. Carbon will not cancel the effects of lowering the pH of the peat, but there probably need to get rid of the color for as long as you filter through peat, you will have color. Driftwood leach tannins into the water as well. If you plants, even better. Humic acids and Tanic released from peat is great for plants. The brownish color grows on you after a while and it seems more natural, you'll learn to love it:) Make sure your lights to penetrate deep enough, because the darkening water will have a minor effect Lighting (minor!). Go to the peat carbon forget. I never use more carbon, except for getting rid of drugs (I use rarely those either!). I know that tanks in perfect health (including mine) who never used carbon. Just then a well cycled bacterial colony and healthy in your filters and you'll be fine. All the best
