THIS IS A SCAM?? HELP PLEASE!?

I received a letter mailed to "Electrolux Home & Business Management Inc. "To say I got a grant" for $ 37,000 and I have been chosen at random blah blah blah ... supposedly this grant is sponsored by Western Union, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Sears, McDonalds ... more than 250 donors and each time i used my debit card to one of these places my information was presented. Enclosed was a check for $ 4950.10. When I called the number the guy said to deposit the check, Western Union and $ 3150 for an escrow account manager to pay taxes on it and they would send the balance via UPS. One thing I do not understand is, if it is a scam why would I have more than $ 1,800 left and why not the guy on the phone asks for my number checking account or something suspicious? The check is authentic enough, watermarks, routing numbers and all ... By the way I am the mother of all the skeptics and have looked everywhere on the internet for some answers without results ... Help?
