Cover Animal

What kind of animal that lives in a lake, will cover itself with sand to make a kind of shell thing?
At one as close to where I live, there are these little worm or small bugs as things that have increased by about 1 inch long and the sand and rocks covering it was tiny, and it all kind of stuck together. I have never seen the inside completely but there is still a small bug worm centipede, as a thing in them, they live under water.
This resembles the larva of the caddisfly. They are rather small insects whose larvae live in water and do business in as you describe.
